Out of all the things I miss from Butlins past - chairlifts, dining room arrangements, tonnes of blazered redcoats, open window monorails, fountains, junior showplace, long corridors in the entertainment buildings that go past ballrooms/indoor bowling/arcades, and the theatres with knights, the ONE thing I miss most is the loss of the Barry Island Butlins indoor funfair.

Walking up those stairs and waiting for the doors to open... the multi-coloured strip lighting, lattice woodwork ceiling, the view out of the window from upstairs, the rides themselves, electric smells and the sounds of motors and the clacking of the Alice in Wonderland ride! The Clacton indoor funfair was similar, but it doesn't stand out anywhere near as much in my memory.

I have a postcard showing the Alice in Wonderland ride at Barry when it had just been taken over by majestic, will dig it out and scan it this weekend. Talking about Indoor Barry, I remember coming up the stairs and there was an indoor skittles green just at the top, and thought that this was by the indoor funfair, but may have been in the games room. Also remember the ladybird ride and the yellowclimbing frame made out of hexagonal plastic.
I have attached one postcard that I have found on the web, and will post more photos of the indoor funfair this weekend.

Good photos. Butlinsbarryisland.com was a great site. Such a shame it closed down.

Love all things "Butlins Yester-years". Loved looking at these photos. Especially the 1st one with the huge windows!

I think that Butlins should bring back this sort of thing. Not only would it bring back childhood memories for so many people but it would also be "ECO Friendly".
