View Full Version : Skegness demolition
Hi,
Spent last weekend at Butlins Skegness and took the following pictures of the demolition currently taking place.
Nice pictures. Never went there but sad to see the site being demolished. No doubt it holds a lot of special memories for a lot of people.
What part of Skeggy is it that is being demolished?
Cheers.

Thanks for the up to date pics. lju
Don't worry cjm it's only a small area of older accom. that's being demolished very near to the rear of the skyline. Perhaps this is to make way for one of the new Butlins Hotels and its car park? Anyone out there with more details??
Lol here's me thinking it was the whole site!
Didnt that accomadation used 2 be for staff??
Didnt that accomadation used 2 be for staff??
No the staff accomodation is further down the site and staff were still living in it last weekend.
Not ANOTHER car park............ :?

Hi all, just back from skeggy. As normal had a great time.
Some gossip for you though, as the photos show previously on this topic of the demolition behind the skyline.
Its is going to be a picnic area and a playground.
The beach club swimming pool has been emptied and the whole place is going to be turned into a health type place with beauticans etc.
Was told by the hairdresser and a member of secruity that they are planning on spending 70 million at skeggy and hope to update some of the fairground rides.
Get some real better rides!

I hope they demolish the staff quarters - they're a bloody disgrace to look at and probably not much better to live in and how obvious is it (or is it just to me?? lol) that they've been told to keep their curtains closed - god knows what's lurking behind em!

Skegness won't get a hotel until the one at Bognor has been built and been a success. This area beind the Skyline will not be car parking!

Hi
Does anybody have any up to date information about this development?
Surely they will be able to have fewer guests then if they have demolished a lot of the accomodation? Or maybe this accomodation wasnt selling as well?
What do theyhave planned for this area?

i used to love staying in those chalets! they were quite big we were in headland grove or gulfstream drive some of gulfstream is standing as they got the take away attached to it!

No accom is still standing in Gulfstream. It is just the takeaway and storage. Takeaway(s) were to be removed at the end of the year to demolish the lot, may not happen now though!

Has anybody got any more news on whats happenig here?
How can butlins really afford to lose lots of accomodation? HAd this lot of rooms actually been used since the 1999 refurbishments? Were they even refurbished?
Where will the takeaways go if they demolish those? And whats in the papa johns one now they got a proper restaurant?

On those photos attacted earlier in thsi thread, it looks as though there are beds lined up on the walkway of the upper accomodation. Am I right?
If so, what would Butlins do with all of the beds and furnitire and equipment that had come out of these rooms?
And were these rooms decorated to the most recent 1998 standard?

I should expect that you are right. Things like the kettles etc would more then likely come in use, along with all of the irons etc, and crockery. Maybe the beds would also come in useful!
Though whereon the resort would they keep it all?
Does anybody know if these rooms have even been used really over thr past couple of years?

Just found this old thread - Does anyone know anymore about what is happening to this field behind the Skyline, if it is being used for picnic and play area or a Hotel or anything else??
Hi Kev, This area was just grassed over when i was there in January. Single story accom further down nearer tennis courts was being refurbished or demolished, couldn't tell (all interior + doors and windows gone).

Hi Ian,
It was still grass when I was there in March, I was just wondering if it had changed since or if anyone else knew anything.
One block of the single storey chalets were definately being refurbished at the time as they had new plastic windows and doors in which seemed to be in completely different places from the original ones.

the chalets that have been demolished were used last season,as standard halfboard,or maybe the season before ,i know because my wife ,3 kids and myself stayed in a 4 bedroom one,it was massive, now to book half board rooms we have to book into silver accomodation at extra cost.
i would think most of the fixtures and fittings from the chalets would be thrown away, have you ever looked inside the kettle at butlins,if you do you will find it thick with limescale ,not butlins fault and it is not harmful,it is just the `heavy' water.
as for the beds come on they are nearly as old as god himself.and the seating in these chalets has been in use since i was 7

the papa johns takeway is still standing but it is now a hire shop.here is a photo of the papa johns takeaway just after it closed.papa johns is now a proper resturant as you can see in the bottom photo its is just acrosss the spalsh pool building.the chalets were demolished in december 2003 and early 2004.when i stayed in them chalets they were refurbished in the 1998-1999 refurbishment the only problem was they only had patio chairs inside them. just outside my chalet was a big crack along the floor but apart from that the chalets were great.

Thats interesting to hear. Maybe these are changes to make those rooms suitable for disabled people, unless they have just converted some of them into rooms with more bedrooms?
With regards to the beds, I couldnt honestly say how old these are in standard, as I havent stayed in a standard soom since the days of Budget! I know for definate that the beds and all fittings were brand new in the Silver accomodation in 1998.
With regards to your comments monorail, you generally only need chairs on accomodation if you have got a dining area, in which case you get proper wooden chairs.

SEVENTY MILLION??????? Seventy Million what?? Can't believe we all missed that...
Still - even if it's a mere 7 million - think what we'd have done with it!!!
Anyway - can anyone download a postcard - or point one out that's already here - that shows where this area was, please? :D
70 million :D Surely not?!
Hopefully they will invest significantly in funfair ries in the coming years, as I feel that this is something that lets Butlins down.
With refernece to the comment about the staff chalets -I too think these look terrible, and to be honest, they are in quite a prominent area of the resort, all silver self catering guests have to walk past them everyday to get to their accomodation!

You can be sure if they do significantly invest in funfair rides, that they will NOT be free to ride on!
Also what's wrong with the staff chalets? If I had my choice as a camper those are the ones I'd rather stay in, since most of them are original flatlets and chalets that still actually look like Butlins.
In my opinion, the lack of 'modern' rides is what lets Butlins down. I know Butlins is never going to have something to live up to Thorpe park or wherever, but lets face it, even the rides they have are in good demand, as there are often queues.
I would be interested to know Butlins' reason for demolshing these chalets.
Its interesting to note that at Minehead, all rows after S line on Ocean Point are now empty and disused. These were clearly refurbished in 1999, as they have got modern kitchen units and are decorated in exactly the same colours as the other appartments. However, they seem to have been withdrawn from guest use, and seem to be used for storage, some being filled with kettles, others being filled with furniture. (Does anybody know if these appartments were of bad conditon at all, even after the refurb?)
The same goes for Starfish Quay (the flatlets) at Minehead, which seemed to have recieved a refurbishment for 1999, though this is now used for staff accomodation. One recent map states that this was Studio appartments and economy appartments.
I often wonder if Rank went a bit over the top, and tried to make the resorts have the maximum capacity possible, refurbishing every last possible room. Then they realised that they simply couldnt fill the resorts to this capacity, and also didnt have the facilitieis for this number of guests. - Anybody know the true reason behind why they refurbished so many now disused appartments?

It hasn't always been this way. I remember when the Funfair at Skegness was quite big, I spent most of my time there when child. There was a lot of rides and they were all free. The funfair used to be at the end of the camp (near the old staff accommodation which I think used to be known as "white camp")
I was quite suprised and disappointed to find that they had moved the funfair and had greatly reduced its size. The only original rides left are:-
Gallopers
Paragliders (or umberellas as I used to call them)
Motion Simulator
A ride that I call the Mexican Hat that was Red and White.
A Childrens Ride

Is the beach club swimming pool the one behind reception area, this was the one we used back in 1992, it was the nearest to our chalets which single storey log cabins (half board) probably silver accommodation opposite the Green Baize snooker club, have these been demolsihed. The only disabled chalets they had were way up the other end of the camp and were the older type chalets knocked into threee to make them big enough. Did not have a very good holiday there for personal reasons. But would not mind going back there one day. It is a long way from south east essex though.

Well, it turns out that you were absolutely right James1, two blocks of these chalets have been converted for disabled use, I've just stayed in one for the weekend and was very impressed!
I had a nice gentle ramp to the door, nice wide doors around the chalet, wet room to wash in, widescreen tv and another tv in my bedroom so was very impressed. I also had the bonus that Reds was just at the end of our row and the skyline not far away either! We could hear Centre Stage from our chalet so I soon learnt not to try going to sleep before it closed which led to a late one on Saturday with me managing to make it to the dance floor on my crutches!! :D

Not that I noticed but then with a false leg attached I was limited to how far I could go! I only went to the places I needed to, ie the chalet, the dining room, Reds & Centre Stage and didn't go off exploring!!
I was told that they demolished Filey by mistake and that it should have been Skeggy.

They had been completed when I went in last August and to answer someone elses' question they were painting many areas of Skegness when I went, everything looked very nice and clean.
The new Gold Check-in recpetion was also beautifully done. Plants have been put in all around the camp, it seems to have had a little make-over. It looked at its best.

They wouldnt want to any were else
Is/was Papa Jo's where Pinewood Studio's cafe was after the 1999 refurbishment?
And I can see what you're saying about the staff accomodation, those chalets are more 'Butlins' like than the newer style ones. But I stayed in one of the ones that used to be behind the skyline (the ones that have been demolished) and, being on the ground floor, the sound of drunken people walking up those metal steps when you're trying to sleep was awful.
