View Full Version : Its Confession Time......

Right guys, its time to 'fess up - what did you steal from your chalet, or from your camp, as a souvineer of your time at Butlins. Big, small, unusual - what was it!!!! Or was there something that you wish you'd taken (particularly if your camp, like mine, has bit the dust).
Me, well my pilfering was on a rather mundane scale. I was once the proud owner of a Butlins stamped fork and spoon, and I once pinched one of those round key fobs - the same colour as the camp you were on - mine was a red one, with Butlins on the front and C 234 stamped on the back (I had it on my own keys for years, before losing it). I also still have somewhere one of those cardboard gate passes that the man on the gate gave you so you could get back in the camp - mine was dark green and stamped 'Barry Island Resort' (not strictly Butlins, but you get the idea).
I did get the idea once of pinching one of those bedsheets or a blanket with 'Butlins' or 'Butlins '76', or whatever was prinited on them - my mother discouraged me from this though (shame).
So come on - its confession time...............
Love from Julie (Barry Island Babe) x :D
Was there that much to steal?
Mind nowerdays butlins steal ur money but that dont count does it???
In the "Billy Butlin Story", Billy Butlin says that loads of cutlery with "BUTLIN'S" wa nicked from the dining rooms.
Billy B used to look at this, however not as a nuciance as he had to buy some new cutlery, but as cheap advertising.
Cheers.
From Tom
Shortly after the Spring Harvest religeous breaks at Minehead in 1990 a memeber of staff quit having being 'converted' he felt it was immoral to work at Butlins (no argument there) He then sent back a parcel of cutlery that had head stolen during his time as a waiter as he wanted to redeem his self.
As for me, well i got a good collection fromk my 2 years at Minehead, a plastic seagul from the ceiling of the sunsplash takes pride of place though.
Of course this doesnt count all the stuff that was relocated from the 'county suites'. During weekend breaks if a set of keys was handed in for a good chalet (yes they were a few) we would sometimes hang on to them and then pay a visit mid week when we knew it was empty and either swap or borrow items for our own flatlets. I am not tlaking about little things either, beds, fridges etc. Naughty i know.
know it sounds werid but when i went to butlins last year we hired a mini Pink fridge i loved it coz it was so unusual and i mean come on a pink fridge! and to this day i have'nt found another one only sliver and blue , i loved that fridge i wished i could ave taken it home lol
I just used to take home the Entertainment Guides that you were given lol.

- 2 or 3 Butlins blankets
-Several Butlins Towels
-A chalet keyring
- All entertainment guides and brochures I've ever had
- A chairlift car
- A "last ride in progress" sign
-A "Chairlifts closed due to inclement weather" sign
-A "Baby crying in chalet" sign
-A Union Jack hat
-A beavers badge

Took them from Ayr when it was changing over to Havan.
I thought they just get throw away anyway!
We use then a week before we go to Butlins now!!!

During 95 - 97 Much like Gabbo, my 'shed' at Minehead was pretty good looking! I managed to pilfer a double bed, armchairs, new curtains, fridge I even changed my heater! I also borrowed a tin of paint and some nice new carpet thanks to the post flood refit in greenacres.
Was no mean feat running through the camp in the dark of night avoiding the security divvy van pushing a fridge on a somerfields shopping trolley.
To this day though I still have some uniform and my dog sleeps on one of those god awful orange horse blankets from the 'fish finger' beds on staff lines.

I have a fire notice from my last visit, although I left the frame and a pillow case with Bourne Leisure on (athough that was packed in error).
We had a Butlins blanket and a chalet key from Barry Island for years but I just cant find them now.
Theres not a fat lot you can take from a modern Butlins chalet that actually has Butlins on it!

in my 7 or 8 or however many years it was working there, I had countless glasses taken from bars to accompany me from the merry England to red camp, numerous tea spoons from my days as a waitor, a few duvets taken, well took from chalets on a saturday morning because they are always better than itchy blue butlins blankets, itchy blue butlins blankets, red socks, innumerable wizzy branded rubbish, including tapes, medals that always seemed to be forgotten to be given to winners, a mic stand that *** off stage crew got for me for a tenner, and thats about it.

I hope the head of security at Bourne Leisure isnt reading this, they might want all there gear back.
When I worked at Pwhelli in the windsor kitchen I use to swap chickens, not live ones but from the kitchen, I could get a packet of ciggies for one cooked chicken.
I also worked in the Spanish bar and would serve my mates from the kitchen with about 5 pints, they would pass them back through the queue until they come to pay and I charged for one - They were hard times.
I have since grown another 16 years and now only steal ashtrays, nothing special about them just the clear plastic ones.
Funny how those stealing days catch up in later life, Im now robbing you all... I work for a credit card company.

As far as stealing chalet keys go, Butlins make a rod for their own back. In the old days you would pay 50p for each set of keys you had and then at the end of the week you handed back the keys and got your deposit back. It may have been 50p but people wanted their money back. Now you just chuck them in a bucket on your way out or post them in a slot by the gate. Madness!!! Theres no way all these keys could be sorted by the time the next lot of people come so they must have quite a few sets to each chalet, and I would hate to be the poor sod who had to sort out the key buckets on a Friday and a Monday!!

Remember those cardboard signs with numbers on them that people had to carry for the (1970s) competitions? My mum entered the Miss lovely Legs competition and made sure she got the same number as our house. She kept it and put it in the porch window when we got home. :)

Not taken so much as given...
Walking in one day as a day visitor, came into the building that housed the pool windows, ya know where you could see everyone swimming. (That was such a great feature!)
Never been any good on the building names, anyway there wasn't much going on, big big room, small cafe & a few fruit machines littered around. Must have been about 1984 or so.
First thing I did was put my money into the fruit machine. Was on my last credit when I won 50p. Put the money back in & the fruit machine offered the hold feature on my last win. Excellent another 50p. Then it held again & again each time until all my credits had run out.
I whacked more money in, & the machine kept on holding.
I'm up around ?11 when my Mother decided to drag me away from the machine, I explain what's happening & she thinks it's cool. I carry on until the machine coughs up dust.
As I said there wasn't much going on in the room & nobody seemed to be paying me the slightest bit of attention even though this machine was continually paying out.
But feeling a tad guilty having taken advantage of a broken fruit machine like Eric & Ernie we casually sidle off, pockets bulging with 10p's, dignity at all times.
:D Got around ?25 from that machine, hee hee. Good memory. :D
That is excellent. I had a similar experience with a tuppenny cascade, but that wasn't at Butlin's. I did actually admit it, but they said that because I was honest I could keep it! When I'd changed it up, it was over ?12.
This honesty business is obviously a problem, because it means I've been racking my brains trying to think of something I've nicked, apart from jam and sachets etc., but not 9,000 like Joe, so mine don't really count! Even my Butlin's stamped fork and spoon were bought off ebay. (Still, I suppose that's at least receiving stolen goods! )
At the very back of blue camp at Bognor is a sort of dump bit and you can see through the fence tons of old beds and fridges etc. I wonder if any of them could be 'rescued'. I wish I'd kept some Butlin's stamped bedlinen - I loved the fact they had the year on as well. I noticed this week that the sheets had 'Bourne Leisure' printed on them and 'Skegness, Bognor, Minehead' - not quite 'London, Paris, New York', is it?

Nah! Probably just cheaper to brand them generically so they can buy in bulk and use them for the Haven sites as well
Always looking on the bright side!
Jay
But there arent other bourne leisure sites at Minehead, Skegness and Bognor Regis!! Only Butlins! So clearly not a generic branding. I wonder why they have started doing this though?
Therenis also an area at skegness, whic used to be visable from the monerail  which was fenced off and contained lotsn of old fridges and beds etc, as well as tables and chairs with like three legs!
Surely it would be better to throw away broken furniture, as it wouldnt be anygood now after all the rain etc. Likewise with the fridges.
maybe they put them there till a removeal van came to get them?
Yeah, they probably let it build up over a year, then get rid of it all. Maybe they hae costs forced upon them too, because of disposing of fridges etc.
I wonder how much furniture gets broken in butlins appartments during the average year? Would butlins charge if something was damanged like a bedside table suring your stay, or leave it just like they do with ther equipment?
Interestingly, both reds & centre stage have their original chasirs and tables, which they have had for years and years, so clearly not many of those get broken.

I think those tables and chaiers have been there since they got rid of the huge comfy arm chairs they had up until the late 1980's.

Its about time a bit of cash was splashed on new furniture if you ask me, its long overdue!
All of the chairs in every venue (or so it seemed) had the same design of stackable chairs, and same design of table. This included the dining rooms, until they were changed into Coral beach etc, though the seat pads on these were waterproof fabric.
All of the dining room furniture has now been replaced at all of the resorts, with moden, colourful chairs. Some padded and some not. Though the padded ones originallyha normal fabric on them.......... not good for a dining room!
I have to agree, that all of the venues need to have new seating at every resort!
Also, in the skyline cafes at all resorts, when they were created, they had some nice, chrome chairs with wooden slats on for the seat, like those you can buy from garden centres. However, these seem to have been replaced with green garden chairs now! Does anybody know why? I have only ever seen one of these broken!

The green chairs are very unprofessional, and should definetly be replaced in my opinion, even if only with cheaper wooden ones, like those sold in ikea.

I can't think of anything I've taken either but have had a similar experience to this one! At Skegness years ago, we were walking past some fruit machines, I just randomly pressed some buttons on one without putting any money in and ?2.00 came out!! I tried other one's since but never had that luck again!! My brother was dead jealous, I remember him trying the same on loads of machines and not getting any money either!!!
My mum was a devil for nicking the cutlery and pillows cases with Butlins on it. I'm sure she must've had the whole cutlery set in the end! She also had towels, which we used to use regular at home!!
The only thing I have with Butlins on it is a blue plastic tray I got from Skegness.

my grandad had sets of bedsheets from 1970 to 1977,and he wasn't ashamed to hang them on the washing line,he even stole,i mean relocated a yellow bread bin from the self catering chalets in the roman bank side of skeggy, also cutlery.
i myself have a dessertspoon and a teaspoon.
4 years ago we stayed in budget half board and someone had kindly left a small fridge in the room.
when i arrived home lo and behold the fridge had found itself into the boot of my car without my knowing it.
which is quite handy as it is a perfect size for when we go camping ,at home it is used as a beer fridge

When Butlins started doing self-catering in 1969 my mum borrowed two teaspoons with Butlins stamped on them but when we went to Bognor in 1981 (self catering) we had to take our own sheets and pillowcases and my dad being ill left them on the bed, we also left a washing up bowl behind one year, think that was clacton. We did not realise how ill my dad was but he died in the July after his last holiday. Apart from sachets of sugar and blue plastic trays taken when I went to Bognor with a club I belonged to back in 1995. I still pinch sugar sachets from the other camps I go to and from ASDA.

LOL @ reading through some of the replies on here :). I used to want to bring home butlins branded stuff but my parents would tell me off, so I felt so guilty, but now after reading this, I wish I had brought some home, although, I used to:
take home some of those sachets of sauce & vinegar etc
those entertainment booklets & packs we were given
even a branded spoon (my mum was so angry, but my dad said he bet other ppl brought them home too), I sold my spoon on ebay last year when I was short of money lol
I used to bring those butlins branded plastic drinks cups home, but when they had been in my suitcase they used to get flattened :(
I also brought home an electricity token but I think this was from pontins
But the most important thing Ive brought home from there that will live with me forever, is my good memories :)
How much did you get for the spoon lol?

We used to steal all sorts of crap! On our keys at Barry one year we had an extra blue tag and disc so we took that home so we could get in for free day trips but we never did!
I wish I had stolen more items which were personalised with logos and the like rather than a load of old tack.
I do also have loads of cuddly toys from the grabber machines as I kept winning! I must get rid of them now but they are part of Barry and I just can't bring myself to.

Theres always someone who misses the point.....
You really are a miseryguts James1. I created this as a lighthearted thread. I took a fork and spoon BECAUSE THEY HAD BUTLINS STAMPED ON THEM. I think that makes them Butlins items??? They were unique, you can't get them anywhere else!!! Same for anyone else who took an ashtray, tin opener whatever. They are all unique to Butlins, and provide happy memories of holidays. Lighten up, ay :D :D

Julie (Barry Island Babe) xx :D :D
I wasnt refering to things that had got Butlins stamped on them BIB, I was refering to the fact that people take cutlery, tinopeners etc etc from chalets nowdays which have got no mark on it at all saying it has come from Butlins. A bit pointless if you ask me!
Then again, it suprises me what items people take from the supermarket which I work at!! (and Im not refering to items for sale either!)

I remember getting a few complaints at Butlins as there were no toilet brushes in the chalets.
We used to say that as so many had been stolen it wasn't cost effective to put them in there any more!
Not sure they were actually stolen.. probably the cleaners throwing them away (which they used to do with all the frying pans instead of cleaning them!!!),.... but it was an interesting complaint!!
Yeah, like you say, they were most likely thrown away!
Many times, on a Saturday / Friday when guests changeover, I've noticed roasting tins, frying pans etc on the stairs of self catering chalets, next to the cleaners trolleys.
Why doesnt Butlins invest in a good dishwasher and things like pans etc that are too difficult to clean quickly could simply be replaced in that chalet, and the dirty item cleaned up as a spare.
Captain Peacock
22-08-05, 11:31 AM
Agree james1... I was saying a similar thing back in the 90's when I worked in Minehead. I was the Accom Manager for Quantocks and Mendips for a while (Budget self-catering) and the big problem was that no-one had frying pans!
I used to do a spot check of the cleaners trolleys etc every so often and always found them in the bin bags.
Even if they don't want a dishwasher they should be returned to the accom stores where they can be cleaned during the week ready for the next intake..... but that means money spent to ensure you have two sets of frying pans, grill pans etc...

My family must be the saddest sods going. We lost a set of keys one year, so didn't get our 50p deposit back. When we got home, we found they keys tucked away somewhere and, would you believe it, posted them to Butlins. We received a one line letter saying they'd arrived and hoping we'd enjoyed our stay......no 50p mind you. :( My dad grumbled about it for days.

I'd have stolen a chalet if I'd known what they were going to do with them anyway. Brick by brick from somewhere at the back of the camp....nobody would have noticed. I could have let it out. We live as far as you possibly can from the sea, but there's a few on here that would come and stay I know....
