Have you seen something (or a photo of something) that looks like it's from Butlins, but isn't? Or a place that has some similarities to Butlins?
Alternatively have you located something that actually is from Butlins, but is now located elsewhere?
I've already posted this in another topic, but in case you missed it, here's Porky the Paper eater in Idora Park, Ohio, USA
Idora Park was an amusement park located in Youngstown Ohio, USA.
The park was open from 1899 till 1984. It sat abandon from 1985 till just recently when a fire in the ballroom and the tearing down of the Wild Cat and Jack Rabbit sounded the parks final end.
Below is a picture of Porky the paper eater, clearly identical to the Butlins ones.
I do not know if it was actually FROM Butlins, or just made by the same company that supplied Butlins. Very interesting either way.
I strongly recommend all campers have a look at the Idora Park site. (although a pop-up stopper will come in handy)
http://members.tripod.com/~idorapark/idora-main.html
These people are very similar to us. They even have photos of the park in its abandoned and derilict state, and a message board (albeit not often used) where they talk about how good Idora used to be!!!
Apparently one of the ballrooms at Idora Park ended its days as "The Crazy Horse Saloon"
Now are they copying us, or we copying them, or is this one of those spooky co-incidences known as synchronicity?
I'll let you decide...

I reckon this Monorail, at Disneyland Hotel, looks very similar to the original Butlins ones (except of course that it has glass windows and doors).

The ex-Filey chairlift cabin which was saved by Paul Wray and is now restored and preserved in his garden. Thanks to Paul for supplying the image.
Just looking at the chairlift now, I can almost feel it as it rocks slightly fromthe weight of my getting in, rocks back the other way as someone else gets in the other end. Then watching the doors slam shut, and slowly rolling down to the release mechanism and nervously waiting for it to be our turn to go!
No turning back now!

Very near where I live in South Australia, there is a large area near the beach that has various amusements, rides etc, and during the school holidays there are more than usual. The temporary ones they've bought in this year are outstanding, I have to say!
I took some photos yesterday of some of the rides. Unfortunately because of the current problems with photos on this forum, I cannot post them here yet. So I have posted them in the photos section of the yahoo butlinsyesteryear group, in a folder called "funfair lookalikes".
Links appear below, however you will need to get a yahoo ID to view the pics :D
By the way, there is also a Supermarket about 50m walk from these rides and guess what it's called? If you guessed "Everydays" you'd be right!
The first photo is of the train that runs all year round along the Semaphore beachfront

Photo 3 is a ride that looks just like the Paratroopers at Butlins (I hope I got the name right, please let me know if not)

They also have a carousel, a big wheel (or ferris wheel), and waterslides. There are some kiosks selling ice cream, candy floss, popcorn etc, and there are some sideshows, such as laughing clowns, hula hoops etc. There a bouncing castle too. Don't forget all this is right next to a veyr large, beautiful sandy beach.
So, what are you waiting for! Get your bookings in now!
Oh, and I am renting out a beachfront room just 3 mintues drive away and the room is nice, but very small and has NOTHING in it. So it could be almost like a chalet in a way.

I just thought of one.
Anyone who lives anywhere near Manchester should check out the Trafford Centre just off the M60 motorway.
Not only is there loads to see and do there but they have REDCOATS (customer service staff and security officers who wear a uniform consisting of red blazer and black trousers, very similar to Butlins Redcoat uniform), and in fact you'll see a lot more redcoats there than you will at Butlins these days!
Also the atmosphere and the facilities in and around the Food Court area are almost identical to those in the Butlins Skylines (Cinemas, bowling, stage entertainment, fast food, snooker tables, bars, restaurants, dodgems, amusement arcades etc)

I used to work in bathrooms at a distributor. In the ware house was Pallets and pallets of sky blue basins, all made by Armitage Shanks. I was there for 4 years and never sold one, but we still had to count them every year at stock take. I think they must have kept them in case7 Butlins had a few damaged. (Think not)

shame though paul, cos i looked very like the ones in the bathrooms. and I know from clactonjohn that when butlins closed down in clacton they auctioned off quite a few. wish I had been there. i would have bid for the doughnut machine. and the bathmats from the chalets.

Well no doubt you all know by now what an outstandingly modest person I am.
As such I would certainly not want to brag or anything, but I thought you might like to see a photo of the house I am in the process of moving into here in Adelaide, South Australia.
It's only rented but I think you'll agree, you couldn't get a much better home than this (unless you are lucky enough to work at Butlins)!

and the photo doesn't really portray just how good it is either, because there's actually a whole line of 'chalets' like mine, with another line opposite, and a communal grass area in the middle.
At the end of the 2 lines of 'chalets' is a carpark, and at the other side of the carpark is another 2 lines of identical 'chalets'.
The whole complex is behind an automatic security gate, meaning only those who live in the complex have access, which gives it the feel of almost being like a holiday camp (minus any of the entertainment facilities though).
Inside the unit is actually 2 large bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and open plan lounge / dining, all of which is very modern and nice, so I get the best of both worlds, so to speak.
It's hard to explain how or why but just being in there or even walking around the paths and lawns in the complex makes me feel very much like being in the old chalet lines at Butlins, and what a great feeling.
It even seems to somehow have the smell of Butlins (I'm not kidding, it does) and it's a great smell too!
Here's one very happy camper!

Downtown at Disneyland Paris remined me of Butlins.
It had the same pastel colour paint work, bright neon lights and loud music. Although the smell was different as they pump out artificial smells at Disney. Not like the greasy smell for the old dining rooms.
And talking of dining rooms, even the dining room at the Santa Fe hotel could pass as a Butlin's dining hall. Again, the pastel colours were everywhere and crowds queueing and pushing to get their food!

Couple of picture of the soilder in Harber Park littlehampton which Billy brought in 1932
I don't know if this counts, but after the forum get-together at Minehead in September, discokev & I were so exhausted that on the journey home we started hallucinating that most things we saw along the road were from Butlins. At first it was funny but then it started to happen so much we got a bit freaked out and had to pull over and get some caffeine & a rest! For example, we passed a truck with an italic "M" on the side and we both thought it was a Redcoat jacket!

You're not hallucinating or crazy. It's an easy mistake to make.
I pass trucks with "M"s on them almost every day, and invariably I think it's a redcoat. Trust me, it's completely normal.

Found this picture on flickr recently of "Houston Milk House". Does look amazingly like the original chalet at Skegness last year (thankfully I understand it has had some maintenance since then!)
Here is the description from Flickr:
Taken in Haney, British Columbia (See more photos here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/bobkh/368743802/map/?view=everyones))
49?11' 53" N, 122?35' 43" W49.19794-122.595164
10735 Allard Crescent, Langley, BC.
Description of Historic Place:
The Houston Milk House consists of a small (10' x 8'), 1 storey rectangular wooden shed, with a peaked roof that significantly overhangs the entrance door. It is located in the Greater Vancouver Regional District's Derby Reach Regional Park in NW Langley, British Columbia.
Heritage Value:
The Houston Milk House is important for its historic and educational significance.
The milk house (date of construction unknown) was an integral part of the Houston's dairy farm during the first half of the 20th Century. Fresh milk was regularly stored inside and then picked up for delivery to the local market. The sunken concrete trough located along one length of the inside of the milk house was filled with cold water and the milk cans were placed in it to keep them cool. This shows the practical methods of the dairy business at a time before electricity and is a rare example of an early milk house.
The milk house is an integral part of the Houston farmsite, which stands on what was originally land occupied by the first Hudson's Bay Company Fort in 1827 and later by the Townsite of Derby (1858-60). It is a focal point for Derby historical interpretation.
The Houston farmsite reminds visitors that resource-based industries found throughout the province (mining, logging and fishing) were only some of the major forces shaping British Columbia in the 19th and early 20th Centuries. The resource-based industries were comprised primarily of single men, while the small farms were comprised of families. Small-scale family farms like this one provided an economic base for the industries mentioned above, and they provided the social stability that was necessary for a growing colony.
Source: Langley Centennial Museum Heritage Files
Character-Defining Elements:
The character defining elements of the Houston Milk House include:
- Location next to the Alex Houston House
- Formal architectural qualities, such as its overall shape and size, its gable roof with deep overhang over the entrance, and irregularly placed windows
- Original materials, such as the concrete base, the wood frame construction and siding, vertical corner boards, the trough inside the house
- The inscription on the concrete pad that reads: 'Derby May 19 1935'

A couple of days ago I took several of my family, and BM bear to Greenhills Adventure Park, which is the nearest thing Adelaide has to a Butlins.
It's not a holiday camp and there's no accommodation or anything, but it's kind of like a scaled down, toned down version of a theme park. Well not really a theme park as such, but anyway it has some fun things to do and once you're in, everything is free.

Yesterday I got a mini-Butlins fix by taking my nephew and neice to "The Beachouse" which is about 10 minutes drive from my chalet here in Adelaide.
By the way, I've tried to make it look like Adelaide is packed with fun things to do, but if you're thinking it might be worth coming to Australia for a holiday, just a friendly warning that there's actually almost nothing to do in Adelaide. Queensland is the place to go.
Anyway, here's a look at a few little things Adelaide does have that sort of resemble Butlins (albeit on a far, far smaller scale!)

Photo 1 = The Beachouse amusement arcade
Photo 2 = Carousel (used to have a roof but for some reason it has been taken off!)
Photo 3 = My nephew Justin with BM bear on the crazy golf
Photo 4 = BM bear in front of the bumper boats

Photo 5 = BM bear in front of a fountain in the crazy golf course. The fountain is a waterfall style one and it kind of resembles a cross between the tipping buckets Butlins used to have in the funpools, and the multi-tiered fountains they used to have next to the old outdoor swimming pools.
Photo 6 = Bumber boats. Much like the Butlins ones but without the canopies (not required as there is a roof over these ones). The best thing about these is each bumper boat is equipped with a water gun so you can shoot water at people in other boats. Makes it so much more fun. Butlins ones should have this.
Photo 7 = Crazy golf course.
Photo 8 = Justin and BM bear on a field next to the Beachouse. Lots of people like to use this field to play sports or just run around on. It's known as Colley Reserve, but I prefer to call it the Gaiety Green (well, the Gaiety brownish-green anyway)!
Pushbutton
25-01-10, 01:32 AM
Photo 9 = Kara with BM bear on crazy golf course (you can see one of the waterslides overhead). The tall round building that can be seen in the left of the background in this photo is actually a revolving restaurant. So another Butlins feature there too!
Photo 10 = The miniature train that runs through the crazy golf course (the track actually intersects the golf course walkways at 2 points so there are little boom gates that come down (with a warning bell) whenever the train is coming through. I like this feature.
Photo 11 = BM bear in front of the miniature train. As I took this photo I noticed the lady driving the train is wearing a uniform that looks a little bit like a redcoat uniform (albeit a red cardigan not a red blazer, but still)!!!
The Beachouse does also have a ferris wheel and dodgems, and there's a beach next to it (as you might guess from the name), but I wasn't able to take photos of these as I forgot to put a memory card in my camera, so I had to make do with the very small internal memory, which was just enough for the 11 photos I did take.
Hope you like them.
All in all the Beachouse is not too bad, it's just very small and very expensive ($9.50 for crazy golf, and $3 for each individual go on a waterslide, for example). Makes me appreciate the value for money I get at Butlins!

I've been meaning to take these ones for a long time but kept forgetting to take my camera whenever I went to Adelaide city centre.
Anyway I did today, so here's a few shots in the city you might like.
The "Popeye" boat reminds me of the old Butlin Queen of the Lake boats from the 1970s. There's actually 3 identical boats called Popeye I, Popeye II, and Popeye III and you can just hop on and pay for a short cruise along the lake any time.
The pedalos are available for hire for a few dollars and you get half an hour I think.
I'll leave it to you to figure out what goes on in Adelaides version of the Crazy Horse!

This first one is a fountain outside the hotel my family were staying in. Ok it's a bit on the small side, but they got the basic shape right!

All the rest were taken at Sea World theme park, the Butlins I go to when I don't go to Butlins!

the front chairlift station, and outdoor funpool. I took the funpool photos from the monorail, which travels right over the funpool just like the Butlins ones used to.
Wow, what great photo's ! I see what you mean about the butlins feel !!

Yes, it's a delight to see those chairlifts and I can see why it all reminds you of Butlins, Push. Thanks for showing us those.

Glad you liked them.
From certain points in Sea World, you can see the funpool, monorail, and chairlifts all at the same time, and it really takes me back!
