View Full Version : Memories of Warner's Hayling Island? (This one, anyway!)

My first ever holiday camp-type holiday was Warner's - somewhere on Hayling Island in '76. It was BRILLIANT! My best memories are going to see HMS Victory (about 20 of us and 2 or 3 members of staff (can't remember if yellow or green coats -sorry!) and the games room, where there was a juke box - kept putting 'Someone's knocking on the door' by Wings on, meself.

On the occasion I've seen postcards on ebay, they've looked familiar - but what I've written are my seriously clear memories! (Worrying!) Anybody else got any?

I worked there as an "Auntie" in 78, and.. it was Blue Linen Blazers.
I remember it well, because they didn't stand up well to the children throwing me in the swimming pool

lol - Thanks for that, Sue! I had a feeling they were blue, but thought it was just my memory playing tricks and getting muddled up with Pontin's! I do remember that the Aunties at Warner's were excellent!

Warners had about 3 camps on Hayling Island - think they still have 2 including the one I've been to 2 or 3 times in the mid to late 80s; Lakeside. Great camp and had a great time there. By then they were green coats incidently. I was there as a holidaymaker rather than a member of staff, although I always fancied being a red or greencoat .. and no, my name *ISN'T* Peggy Oleranshaw, although I know how she feels. :D

Still didn't really compare to being at Butlins Bognor in the early 60s though. I notice from this site it was built in 1961. That's a big surprise. I didn't realise it was as late as that. I've been there many times in the mid to late 80s too usually for day trips with a car full of kids and always enjoyed the new super deluxe playpool but for me it was never the same as that first trip with chalets, one big dining hall and the old (new at that time) buildings which sadly seem to be no more - or just less than they were. Call me a traditionalist and you'd be right. :)

Cheers and happy memories :P

Used to be called Coronation, but boy have they pumped the prices up. Beautiful place but the chalets are here and there and our group like to be together. I've been to Sinah Warren and Mill Rythe as well.

Thank you sweetdenzy. Appreciate your insight.

BTW I watched that Confessions from a holiday camp a short time ago. I notice from another thread here that it was filmed in Mill Rythe. I wonder how much that camp has changed from then to now? Would be interesting to go and see. :)

Hi Redshed. Thanks for a quick reply and the info. That's excellent news. Nice to know at least one camp isn't changing very radically. :)

When Mark Fowler died Pauline was on holiday with Derek along with Dot Jim and sonia and Martin. I just had to ask my wife for the names as I watch it now and again but I dont know the characters. :D :D that's my excuse anyway.

I often work there so next time I'm there I'll get some pictures for you and put them on here.

Hello again redshed. Thank you again to you and your wife for that info. Yes, I remember the time you're talking about. I recorded the episodes up to and including Mark's leaving but not afterwards I don't think.

But yes, it would be great to see some photos from around the place so thank you for those in anticipation too.

What do you do there btw if you don't mind me asking?

Ok will do, I think the one they filmed Hi-de-hi in, was Dovercourt which is no longer there.

Yes you're quite right it was Dovercourt and yes, sadly no longer there either. What a shame.

Anyone got any photos of the place before it was closed or demolished? :?:

YEAH THEY WENT ON HOLIDAY AND I THOUGHT I RECOGNISED IT FROM MY HOLIDAY THERE. I RECOGNISED THE CONVERSATORY BIT WHERE THEY PUT THE CHRISTMAS TREE (GOT A LOVELY PIC OF MY HUBBY AND I SAT THERE) AND THE BALLROOM. I WENT TINSEL AND TURKEY THERE WITH THE LOCAL TENANTS ASSOCIATION. FOOD WAS GOOD THERE.
