Hi there, firstly warners was built in the 1920's and most of the main hall was in bad need for replacement rather than repair, the gales in the late 80's caused even more damage as there was rather large trees nearby, it was bulldozed in late 80's as well to make way for a housing estate

Hiya,

Dovercourt Bays last season was 1990. They were still advertising and taking bookings for the 91 season, but closed at the end of 1990. Went on holiday there during that last season and was one of the best holidays we had. the atmosphere was brilliant.

Then worked at Gunton hall in 90 and some of the ents staff went down to collect the kids club stuff. cos we all ended up with dovercourt ribbons and t-shirts from the kids club.

Some other bits and pieces came from there too. other camps got other bits.

:) Sal

I was scanning some old photos yesterday and came across the attached, which must have been taken around 1947, shortly after WWII, on my very first trip to a Holiday Camp (and as a matter of fact, my very first holiday after living through the blitz). Viewing it made me search for any references to Dovercourt Bay Holiday Camp as I remember that holiday quite well. That's how I came across this thread. I'm now at the ripe old age of 70 and have lived in the USA for the last 40 years. This photo certainly brought back some memories for me so I figured it might do the same for some other campers from that period. I used to live in Romford but till now, never realized that Dovercourt Bay was also in Essex. I'm the older one on the left and that's my brother and sister with me.

i imagine there was quite a lot of damage done by the hurricane in 1987. It was quite a small camp really. Not a lot to do during the day time.

i wnet to dovercourt bay holiday camp many times with my family as a teenager, they were the best holidays ever. had some of my first encounters with boys there, one in particular i remember, paul windred,a local who lived near the camp and used to come in after school, anyone who lived or worked at the camp recall him?would love to know what he up to now! spent a lot of time in the cinema and the disco with its concealed dark area, those were the days!
