I have been to Caister (now owned by Haven) when it belonged to Ladbrokes way back in 1985, 86, then it was taken over by Warners and now it belongs to Haven. A lot of the old chalets have gone and been replaced by caravans or mobile homes. Had a holiday there back in October 2000 but the chalets are not suitable for wheelchair users. Food is still good though but do not like Harry Ramsdens. The fish and chip place across the road from the camp used to do spam fritters, delicious.

I didn't like that Harry Ramsdens at Skegness, but the one up the Road in Mablethorpe, Golden Sands, was well nice!

I love there Battered Sausage! lol

I wrote this lil' piece, tell me what do you think about it, thanks. "no diamond torn out of this broken-hearted earth, but a child on a pilgrim's path! And this path, it lead to nowhere, and this land is cold and harsh. and no diamonds are to be found, in the sky above, nor the mud beneath my feet".

Hiya,

There used to be 2 camps side by side at Caister. One was called Caister Beach and the other Silver Sands. They had 2 separate clubs and swimming pools etc. Then later on they were joined together to become Caister Holiday Centre.

There are quite a lot of camps along that coast. Went out on a bike once when I was staying at Caister and got lost on one of the other camps because they are all linked by the same road. They have got different swimming pools as well. It belonged to Ladbrokes when we first went there years ago. They used to have the Lions Disabled holiday there, I see by the brochure this year that is being held at Seacroft, a few weeks before we go. Seacroft is opposite the Pontins camp at Hemsby and used to belong to Pontins until 1997. It now belongs to New Horizons.

Caister Holiday Camp, as it was back in the 50`s and early 60`s, used to be on both sides of the main Yarmouth to Hemsby road. It went almost back as far as the huge water tower behind it. This was still painted in camoflage colours when we first went there in the early 50`s. On the side of the road opposite the beach, was the dining room, paper shop and indoor sports facilities, like darts and snooker, as well as quite a few chalets. This side was sold off for housing in the 70`s. A new dining hall was built on the beach side of the road in the 60`s. The Holiday Inn and Holiday Cafe were always next to the beach. The Holiday cafe was once the reception for guests arriving by train at the camps` own station. The railway line running between the camp and the beach. The entertainment was always very good, one season even boasting the Ivy Benson all Girl Band. There was all the usual holiday camp type of outdoor entertainment during the day, and in the evening, some very good acts etc. in the Balroom and Holiday Inn. It had many owners over the years. To help prevent the "cheap" holiday makers in Silver Sands caravan park next door using the Caister facilities, every camper was expected to wear a small house badge bearing the year of visit and the "house" you were in. Lion, Tigers, Bears and Hippos if I remember. We used to go to either Caister or Butlins in alternate years. Caister Camp has the dubious honour of being the first place I ever got roaring drunk in, at the aged 16. I didn`t look my age so I used it to my advantage. Every year we went,my excitement grew as we came up the hill and saw the huge sign painted on the roof of the Ballroom, saying "CAISTER CAMP". I haven`t been to it since Ladbrokes owned it. At one time a friend of my Dad`s was a manager, before it was taken over by the Yarmouth Brewery in the early 60`s. One thing that anyone visiting the camp in the 50`s and 60`s will remember is the tea lady. Every morning, about 7, a team of ladies went round all the chalet blocks, ringing a bell and serving tea from an urn, right to your chalet door. Marvelous. I have many happy memories of Caister, and think it could have it`s own web site.

no the earliest i went there was 1985. the club i used to belong to went the same week as the lions disabled week and it cost about ?86 full board. we had an eastern national coach with tail lift for wheelchairs. we were in the chalets down by the swimming pool which are now used for the staff.a lot of the chalets have gone now. we went there several times, when it belonged to warners and Haven. last time i went there was 2001. the chalets we had were not very good for wheelchair people. we went there in the october.
