Thanks to BillyGirl and others we have seen recent pics of the water in the pools at the old Sunsplash pool in Minehead.

We have heard rumours that the water is used in the sprinkler system but in all the pics I have seen the water is really clean and pure. Do you think they are keeping the water clean for a reason?

Surely if the water was just being left there it would get festeringly dirty after many years of disuse...

Could Butlins people actually be still suing the pool...?

Yes, it's widely known the pool is used for lifeguard training! :)

I know that you have to put chemicals into a pool on an almost daily basis to keep the water sparkling (from friends in South Africa who own pools), so they must be doing that for a reason.

I am not sure that they still are using it for training. i am sure my freind (who is the pool manager there) told me they stopped that at the end of 2004. I will ask him.

if they swich off the circulation the water will go green almost over night. If the pool is not in use then there will be very very little chemical used, especialy in the sunsplash as it uses ozone as its primary disinfectant.

the main cost will come from heating the water (which they were still doing when i took the pics in the minehead section in 2003) but i dont think they are heating it anymore. This again would reduce the amount of chemicals as generaly the warmer the water the more chemicals you need.

So for the minimal cost it makes sense to have cleaner water than a stagnant pool of green water.

i also assume that if they leave it to go stagnent then it will start forming lumpy bits and maybe this would block the sprinkler system so it would be no use?

Well they were definetly using it for training when I was there in July, as thats how I got to have a glimpse around the stairs area etc. There was a sign on the door saying 'Lifeguard training'.[/img]
