Hi all,
Does anyone have any photos of the old Sussex Coast Holiday Village in Middleton On Sea in West Sussex?
It was built in 1922 by Sir William Blount named New City, it was built on the site of an old Sea Plane factory and the restaurant was one of the old hangars (was supposed to be a listed building!). It had the main drive and 2 roads either side going down to the sea. Later on, overlooking the beach, they built a hotel called Southdean Hotel. Camp was then called Southdean hotel and sports club. then the hotel. Warners had it and named it Sussex Coast holiday Village. It was then sold to Shearings Holidays and they had it for 1 year. They sold it in either 1993/94 as they were offered loads of money (so many million) so it could be knocked down and housed built on it. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! Yet another one gone.
Sorry for going on and on. Bad habit of mine, talk too much.

For one year, I think 1986, it was the summer holiday venue for CLUB 18/30 in the uk.
The ballroom was turned into a disco and some pretty good sound and light kit installed.
Still 90% blokes, 10% birds..... glad I pulled on the coach on the way there:)

i went and had a look at it in 1987 after the hurricane and it suffered more than butlins at bognor. they would let us walk round because of the damage to buildings.

Whatever happened to the map and history of the place? As i remember, as you walked down the corridor past the shops, (shop lol) and there was a framed history and pictures of it all, from the beginning (the ideas etc) to how it was then (93). wondered what happened to it. would love to see that.
and what happened to the restaurant building? it was housed in an old hangar (sposed to be listed) from when it was a sea plane factory. think originally there were two, but only one survived, and was turned into the restaurant with staff rooms above it. when the camp was demolished, did they just demolish it, or take it down, and move it to a museum or something?
sorry for all the questions, its getting to me now lmao

I often wondered what ever happened to the place after `85! I had a good time until i left about a month b4 the end of the season. Then they wouldn`t let me in the disco complex? I stayed at a bed and breakfast for a two week break and met up with a barmaid or two from the local pub.. All the residents hated the place?

i went there in 1987 the day after the hurricane and they would let us look round because of the danger of buildings collapsing. There were three coaches in the car park allwith their windows blown in. Perhaps that what made them close it down. They had to rebuild butlins at bognor

Thank you for the link to the old pics of sussex coast ES. Couldn't remember the name the place had been built as - New City. In the corridor opposite the shop and down to the ballroom, (right hand side) there used to be loads of old pics and the history of the camp, and also a map. didn't realise (till i was there) the the two roads to the left of the camp, and the two to the right, were also part of the camp when it was built. was good also to see the old hangar that the staff rooms were above and the downstairs was the dining room.
Stayed in the old hotel part (with the marble floor and pillars) on the ground floor for two nights, (in a staff room). can remember there were these wierd little creatures that looked like small shrimps but they jumped. (jumped onto the bed at the side of me scared me half to death lol). they moved us upstairs then to the top floor.
can remember as well, the wrestlers were staying in the rooms on the top floor as well, and were playing bowling along the corridor at some stupid time of the morning. security had to come and make em go to bed. didn't half make a racket.
aaah, the memories. i do miss that place. wish id got some pics when it was open, and again as soon as it had closed. the same with devon coast (paignton) and Dovercourt.
Cheers again for the link.

Was still open in 95/96. I worked there in 95 had a top time, ten people crammed into big Daves tiny room smoking and playing striker on the SNES Josey Bruce etc. I'm Craig from Leicester btw in case anyone from the time pops on.
The old ginger bloke who sold the baccy and eastenders alcohol Billy if I remember right.
Day trips to Brighton were always a fun messy affair. Then again the whole period I worked there was a fun messy affair, drink and smoke till 4am then up and work for 7am couldnt manage it now. Well not every night.
I worked at Butlins in 96 and poped up to the camp to see if any old faces were there, only Josey I knew the rest were all Polish.
Also am I right that it was also called Warners coast & country?
Be great to hear from anyone there at the time.
Take care, Craig.

Sound like silverfish they tend to live in damp conditions, which would be right for the place

Hey Craig, I'm Carole and worked there during 1993 - 1996 when it closed. Worked in restaurant with Tony McGarry and Sharon Thomas then worked in the office with Elaine, Elaine and Sharon. Can't remember you though????
I am intrigued to find out who you are. Sadly I don't think they saved any of the history stuff, it was all just dumped.

ooooh, Tony McGarry, thats a blast from the past. He used to be security at Dovercourt Bay till it closed, then moved to Sussex Coast and worked in the kitchens. Do you know if he's still around? and where he's working now?
One of the managers (can't remember if he was the General Manager when me and my ex were there) Paul something or other. can't remember his last name either. He used to be one of the managers at Gunton Hall in '90. I used to say "morning Paul, (no answer) morning paul" everytime he walked past me when we were on breakfast doors lol. then one day, he turned around and said good morning (looked at my name badge ) and said, Sally-ann. One of the other girls onthe ents team Cristy Dee, said, in all the years she'd worked there, he'd never spoken to her lol. told her i was persistant lmao.
My ex depp'ed for Andy Beaumont, in Flair, the resident band. Last I heard of him was he's now living with Carol and their son CJ in Felpham, and he and the band are now the residant band at the new horizon site at South Downs.

Hey Sal, Last I heard of Tony was he moved in with one of the locals in Middleton and then they broke up. Wouldn't have a clue where he went to. Paul went to Wales but was 'asked' to leave??? Not sure so don't quote me.
I remember Flair, with Kay the lead singer??? Funny I heard that "Last Waltz will last forever" the other day somewhere and thought of them! Always knew when it was lock up time if ya heard them playing that.

Lots of photos & history on this site: http://www.ukholidaycamps.co.uk
Have just found this site - how great to see part of the old team on here, Yazz, Andrea & Scott. Maybe "We'll meet again", although hopefully not in those lovely outfits, from the weekends. I think we all have fond memories of that time - long hours, crap pay, but what fun!!!! Well, for the most part anyway. Didn't always seem that way when we were rehearsing till all hours and then getting up for doors!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Carole, good to see you on here too!! How's life on the other side of the world?? xxx

Hi Carole I dont have a great memory anymore but if I remember right you was a girl with wavy long blonde hair?
I was a pain in the arse whilst I was there I worked about three sections up on the right as you came through customers doors. I was from Leicester and I tended to be hungover every morning that or still drunk after coming to work from big Daves room. My section was the one with trod in food on the carpet.
I used to have at that time a long beige timberland coat and I got a frog tattoo on my forearm whilst there (thats how much of a state I ended up in)
I can remember outings to kings was it the nightclub on the pier and one time a load of us went out in a minibus or two to a club miles out where it played house music, from memory there was a good twenty or so of us.
Other things I remember are saving the heads from the almond trout to frit the life out of Sharon and one time saving the heads from a bag of prawns to make fish fingers
