View Full Version : Q: Haven Ayr & Pwhelli - half board
Seen some cheap half-board chalet breaks at ex-Butlins Ayr & Pwhelli. How do the chalets, buffet dinners and breakfasts compare with what you get at Butlins?
Thanks - KAF
Was at Ayr the other weekend
Ayr is less Butlins than Pwllheli. Just a sea of caravans. All that remains of Butlins is about 6 rows of chalets. (We were in standard/Bronze or what ever they call it and I would say its on a par with Butlins although you have to pay extra if you want Maid service. The beds were made and they even supplied towels :)) two or three cladded buildings and the boating lake although with the site being on a hill there are quite a few sets of original steps about. the food was better than Pwllheli more choice (but not as much as Butlins) and you are not restricted to just one Main course (as you were at Pwllheli last year where breakfast was served on a side plate).
The entertainment was total crap the usual Rory scream-athon every night followed by what I will describe as a third rate club singer using backing tapes, no shows naff all. Talking to the regulars they say the site has a new manager and things are improving.
On the Plus side there is no smoking in any venue, pity you have to walk through a cloud on exiting a venue. Also the Lager is cheaper than Butlins at ?2.55 a pint :)
It cost us ?116 for two adults in a two bedroom chalet (that had a double bed in one room and a single and set of bunks in the other) half board which I thought was good value in the end.
Have Fun !!!

Went to Ayr in August last year, disappointed, rained the entire time we were there, took my three boys who literally grew up there, in fact eldest boy who is now 20 was conceived there!!! Ha ha. They really couldnt grasp the fact that there was really nothing to do, unless it involved spending money. The whole Butlins experience had gone and they didnt like it, they didnt like the fact that the Food Court, Stuart Ballroom, Continental Bar, Pig & Whistle, etc., etc., where not there anymore but their biggest disappointment was the chairlift and miniture railway and camp church had gone!!!!
And the shows!!!!
